Below Ahaadeeth were discussed in the context of verse 28 of Surah Furqan on Friendship in the weekly program conducted at Bhiwandi by Br. Shaheen.

Islam is a Socio Eco political way of life and guides us in all spheres of life.

Friendship in Islam:

1) Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) said: “Man is influenced by the faith of his friends. Therefore, be careful of whom you associate with/select your friend.” (Bukhari)

2) Once the Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) was asked, “What person can be the best friend?” “He who helps you reminds you of Allah (SWT) when you see him, adds to your knowledge when he speaks, and reminds you of hereafter when he acts,” (Qurtubi – Al Bazzar)

How is your friendship:

Abu Musa Al-Ash`ari (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “The example of a good companion and a bad one is the bearer of musk and the worker on the bellows. A bearer of musk would give you some, you might buy some from him, or you might enjoy the fragrance of his musk. The worker on the bellows, on the other hand, might spoil your clothes with sparks from his bellows, or you get a bad smell from him.”

Selection of Friend:

“Keep only a believer for a companion and let only a pious eat your food”. (Tirmidhi)

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said there are 7 whom Allah will shade in His Shade on the Day when there is no shade except His Shade: Amongst them will be ‘two men who love each other for Allah’s sake, meeting for that and parting upon that’ [Bukhari]

Qualities you and your forms should possess:

Qualities your friend should possess

1) The believer is the mirror of the believer. [Abu Dawud]

2) The Apostle of Allah (PBUH) said the following in a hadith which was narrated by Abdullah bin Umar (RA): “A Muslim is the a brother of another Muslim; so, he should not oppress him, nor should he leave him alone. Whoever fulfilled the needs of his brother, Allah will fulfill his needs; whoever brought his (Muslim) brother out of a discomfort, Allah will bring him out of the discomforts of the Day of Resurrection, and whoever screened a Muslim, Allah will screen him on the Day of Resurrection.” (Muslim)
