Speaking at a seminar on ‘Depression, Suicides and Rapes’ at the Islamic Centre today, renowned socio-political analyst, Dr. Salim Khan suggested that our outrage over rapes should not be dependent upon the profession, religion and caste of the rapist or the victim, or the political party ruling the state in which that rape is committed.
The keynote speaker, Dr. Syeda Ruksheda (President of Bombay Psychiatric Society) urged the audience to empathetically reach out to those in need of mental help. She also said that we should ensure that our Imams and school teachers are duly trained in dealing with mental health cases.
Advocate Mahesh Kabra said that we all have an inhibitory button within us that can stop us from taking extreme steps like suicide. At this, Dr. Salim Khan said that a person’s faith system can act as the perfect button. Fear of the law, and the realisation that we would all have to stand before God one day, can alone motivate man to act righteously.
Others who spoke on the occasion were marital counsellor Mr. Alauddin Khalifa and political leader, Mr. Sabastian Fernandes. This seminar was organized by the Mira Road chapter of Sadhbhavna Manch, and hosted by Jamaat-e-Islami Hind Mira Road.
