On the occasion of Independence Day, Kurla unit of JIH organized a short lecture on the Role of Muslims in the Struggle of Indian Independence. The lecture was delivered by none other than Janab Siddique sb who is known to have a good grip and understanding of the Historical facts, particularly related to the Freedom Struggle.

The learned speaker remarked in the beginning itself that half an hour was too short a time to even share the glimpse of the events spanning across more than century and a half.

Some historians begin the description of War of Indian Independence from 1857, some from battle of Plassey, and some from the events beginning from the time of Shah Waliullah Dehlavi and his Mission which going forward led to the martyrdom of great figures like Syed Ahmad Shaheed and Shah Islamil Shaheed.

It is of great significance to know the real heroes of this prolonged struggle. Modern academicians and historians have made every effort to malign the contributions made by the Ulema in general and the Muslim community as a whole. This has resulted in the youth of today to have a biased and one-sided view of the Freedom Struggle. The learned speaker urged the Muslim Youth to learn about the contributions made by their ancestors, the Ulema in particular and the quantum of sacrifices made by the community.

The speaker took the audience down the memory lane and threw light on quite a few important facts pertaining to the role and contributions of the Ulema, their stepping back and taking the lead in Preservation of Islam solely, formation of the Indian National Congress and the Muslim League, tenure of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad as the President of INC, Lord Archibald Wavell and his Cabinet Mission Plan, Jawaharlal Nehru as the President of INC, Lord Mountbatten and the Divide and Rule policy adopted by the British, ultimately leading to one of the greatest and most violent upheavals of the 20th Century – the Partition of India.

The speaker made a strong point that the community who had suffered the maximum losses in the Struggle for Freedom is the Muslim community but this has now been put under veil and the contribution of the community has begun to be questioned.

The speaker urged that it is our main responsibility and duty now to present the right message of Islam with our words and actions, this is the only way forward for the development of a peaceful society where all the countrymen live in harmony and no one is able to divide them on the basis of religion, caste, territory, etc.

Role of the current Muslim leadership was questioned in terms of bridging this gap and leading the masses in this direction. The masses should be cautious in accepting a leader who divides us further or draws a wedge between us and other communities.

Commenting on the current negative path followed by many Muslim organizations, the speaker highlighted that many of them are now just working to safeguard their own future instead of pursuing the real goals which led to their foundation.

The lecture was closed with the dua from Almighty Allah for giving each one of us the right thinking capacity and to have right knowledge about the past endeavours of our ancestors and be confident and proud Indians.
