Azad Maidan, Mumbai.
An assertive public protest against Homosexuality was organised by the Mumbai division of Jamaate Islami Hind this afternoon at Azad Maidan. The primary objective of the agitation was to convey to the Government, and the public at large, the disastrous fallouts of legalizing an act as obscene as Homosexuality and to dissuade the Centre against bringing in any legislation to de-criminalize it.
Speaking on the occasion, Javed Shaikh, sec. of National affairs, JIH-Mumbai highlighted the purpose of the gathering. He lamented upon the fact that incumbent ministers like P. Chidambaram and Kapil Sibal are supporting gay right activists, in an apparent contempt of the Supreme Court of India. He also stressed that Jamaate Islami Hind has always condemned homosexuality and will leave no stone unturned in its efforts to safeguard the Indian ethos.
Dr. Mandviwala spoke of the social and medical repercussions of homosexual relations and enlisted a number of diseases that find their source in sodomy. Swami Muktesh Anand averred that such a reprehensible act has been regarded as a sin in all religions, be it Hinduism, Christianity or Islam. Mr. Shabbir Deshmukh, Mumbai president of MPJ, Mr. Rashid Azeem, sec., Mumbai Milli Council, Mr. Hafeez Farooqui, sec., PR, JIH-Maharashtra, Mr. Afzal Baig, Organizer, JIH-Mumbai and Mr. Aslam Gazi, sec., National affairs, JIH-Mumbai were among the other respected speakers who reiterated that Homosexuality is an anti-social practice and that Indian society, entrenched in religion and values can never condone this profane act.
Arguments frequently put forward by Gay-right activists were also convincingly answered and all doubts about its alleged permissibility were put to rest. Young activists holding colourful placards denouncing homosexuality caught the eye of bystanders and served to send the message across. This peaceful and well-organised protest was attended by many journalists representing an array of media houses who promised to further this noble cause using the fourth estate.
